Vernie Ardella Cates, 102 year old resident of Doniphan, MO died Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Southeast Health Care of Ripley County. Mrs. Cates was born March 25, 1911, in Randolph County, AR to the late Amos and Sena Ann Jones Billips. She was a homemaker who loved to garden, quilt, knit, cook, flowers, and visiting with family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Cates was of the Baptist faith.
On August 29, 1929 she was married to Virgel Gilliam who preceded her in death in 1971 On July 26, 1968 she was married to Grover Cleveland Cates who also preceded her in death in 1976. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are four daughters, Nadine Cole of Warm Springs, AR; Opal Phillips of Doniphan, MO; Delois Dobbs of Doniphan, MO; and Anna Jean Eoff of Dittmer, MO; twenty grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren, and 3 step children , Ada Brown of Doniphan Iven Cates of Doniphan and Iver Cates of Doniphan
Funeral services for Mrs. Cates will be Monday, November 18, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hubert Payne officiating. Visiting will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday, November 17, 2013. Burial will be in the Johnston Chapel Cemetery.
