Obituary of Steven Bass

Please share a memory of Steven to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Steven C. Bass, 61, of Doniphan passed from this life November 7 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Steve, the youngest son of Charles (Lewis) and Emma Bass, was born June 30, 1952 in Ellington. A lifetime resident of Ripley County, he loved his community and was deeply regarded by his family and friends. He was employed with Doniphan R-1 School District as a school bus driver, where he enjoyed the daily interaction with co-workers and "his kids" on bus 6. Whether it was a school bus, tractor trailer, heavy construction equipment or johnboat - if it moved he could drive it. Never afraid of work, he began in the timber industry when he was fourteen. Steve was the first man to drive a backhoe across the Current River. He was a man of many skills. He could do anything he put his mind to, be it making his own convertible from a Chevy Nova to building a deck. Steve was a fun-loving, kind-hearted man, who always had a joke to tell or a story to share. No matter the need, he was the first to offer a helping hand and he kept those he cared about as his top priority. He grew up in the Lone Star area and made many memories with his life-long friend Danny Kennon. After a three-year whirl-wind courtship of climbing forest towers and walks in the rain, he married his sweetheart Priscilla Wiley on April 20, 1974 at the First Baptist Church in Doniphan. His love for and pride in his wife and two daughters was overshadowed only by his adoration for his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, attending stock car races and watching westerns. Steve is survived by his wife, two daughters, Marcia (and Brian) Zoellner of O'Fallon and Katie (and Randy) Plumb of Doniphan and honorary son Rob Holland of Doniphan; three grandchildren, Nora and Anita Zoellner and Remington Plumb; two brothers, Jerry (and Cleo) Bass and Charlie (and Cheryl) Bass, all of Doniphan; several nieces and nephews and numerous close extended family and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, one brother, Ralph Bass, one infant sister Mary Lou Bass, and one granddaughter Georgia Grace Plumb. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013, at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. A Celebration of Life will follow at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jennifer Hall officiating. A private family burial at the Doniphan City Cemetery will be held at a later date.
