Obituary of Christene Herring

Verna Christene Herring (94) passed away on October 12, 2013, at SouthEast Health Center in Doniphan, Missouri. Mrs. Herring was born July 6, 1919, in the Johnston Chapel Community, located about 6 miles south of Ponder, Missouri. She moved to Doniphan in February, 1946, after working in a St Louis Ammunitions Plant during WW II. Always called "Christene", she married Finis Truman (nicknamed "Harry" by the folks in Doniphan) Herring. They had one child, Harry Truman Herring. Her husband, Finis Truman Herring, preceded her in death on March 3, 1955. Also preceding her in death: her parents , Walter and Myrtle (Gibson) Baker; her brothers , Clyde and Vestal Baker; and her sisters , Imogene Oliver of Pocahontas, Arkansas, Jesse Ray of Detroit, Michigan, and Reva Baker of Doniphan. Mrs. Herring was a member of the Doniphan Eastern Star Chapter #288 and a member of the Doniphan Methodist Church. She loved her church and her church friends. While raising her son and caring for her invalid sister, Reva, she worked for Dr. Frank and Dorothy Johnson at the hospital as a nurse's aide. She also provided childcare for many (now adult) children in Doniphan. After her son left home for the military, she worked at Vitronic, where she remained until she formally retired in 1984. She loved her neighbors and had a great love for her flowers. Mrs. Herring is survived by her son, Harry T. Herring, his wife, Michelle (Imperial, Missouri), a step-granddaughter, Catherine Rayann Wilgus (O'Fallon, Missouri), as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be at Edwards Funeral Home from 10:00-12:00 p.m. on October 15, 2013, followed by a noon service with interment at the Doniphan City Cemetery with Reverend Jerry Reynolds officiating.
