Obituary of John Stilwell
John H. Stilwell, 88, of Doniphan, Missouri, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the Current River Nursing Center in Doniphan.
Mr. Stilwell, son of the late Charles A. Stilwell and Lucretia Patterson Stilwell, was born July 1, 1919, at Doniphan, Missouri. He was a professional baseball player and had been drafted by the New York Giants in 1945, the Chicago White Sox in 1948 and the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 and 1950. He taught school for a period of time and later worked in quality control for McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Mr. Stilwell loved playing baseball and also enjoyed playing music. He was an avid golfer and had scored a double eagle on hole #3 at the Current River Country Club on July 21, 1983. It was the first such feat in the history of the club. Mr. Stilwell was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
On August 27, 1941, he was married to Maudie Stilwell in Ripley County. She preceded him in death on February 26, 2008.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Ernestine Stilwell of Doniphan; two sisters, Pauline Cody and Emily Joplin, both of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday morning, March 8, 2008, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will be in the Doniphan City Cemetery.
