He loved his family, and a highlight was watching his grandchildren play sports. Jim had served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was of the Seventh Day Baptist faith.

On February 17, 1968, Jim married Betty Jean Kutach in Columbus, TX. They had marked 55 years of married life together. She survives.
