Obituary of Sophia Irene McNew

Sophia Irene McNew, 79, of Doniphan, MO, departed this life Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born March 14, 1941 in Doniphan to the late Bill and Sallie (Triplett) Griffin. Sophia was talented and enjoyed crafts, sewing, and drawing, and delighted in cooking for her family. She loved to drive and took pleasure in the scenery as she passed by. Square dancing was also on her list of favorite activities. Sophia attended Simpson Creek Baptist Church and had worked as a quality control inspector in a fish processing plant. On July 17, 1959, Sophia married Oscar L. McNew in Doniphan, MO. He preceded her in death on December 8, 2014. Surviving are her children, Debra L. McNew York (Ed) of Farmington, KY and Oscar B. (O. J.) McNew (Alice) of Cameron, MO; one sister, Evelyn Knoblock of Anderson, IN; brother, Bill McNew of Toledo, WA, grandchildren, Josh McNew, John McNew, Lexi McNew, Tasha Bennett, and Sheena Hoskins; and great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Sam, Jordan, Hunter, Briauna, Maddie, Scarlett, Miranda, Roy, and Benton. In addition to her parents and husband, Sophia was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ethel Tillman, Joann Fleury, Ora Redus, Nellie Moore, and Katie Black, and brothers, Charles McNew, Cecil McNew, Louie Griffin, James Griffin, Charlie Griffin, and Cleo Griffin. Visitation will be Friday, January 8, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. also in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Amity Cemetery.
