Please share a memory of Howard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Howard Donald “Don” Slayton, 77, of Doniphan, Missouri, died Friday, September 8, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Mr. Slayton, son of Howard E. and Mary (Stack) Slayton, was born November 14, 1939, in Doniphan. He was a proud veteran of the U. S. Army.  Don had many careers but was principally a letter carrier with the U. S. Postal Service.  He had also been a dockhand in the trucking industry, a deckhand on barges and first mate on the Mississippi Queen.  Additionally, he was a shoe repairman and custom bootmaker.  Don was an avid reader and loved old movies and history.  He retired as an over-the-road truck driver.

Upon retirement he shared a home with his mother, Mary, in Doniphan.  This final retirement of his “career” is where Don’s kindness, caring and compassion shown like a bright star, allowing his mother to live her years out in the home she loved.  Her lawn, shrubs and flowers were cared for and she was safe, secure and loved.  For Don’s dedication to his mother, countless people are eternally grateful.

Don is survived by his brother, Joel David Slayton of Florissant, Missouri; a nephew, Jeff (Nancy); a niece, Heather (Joe); 4 great nieces, Roxanne, Veronica (Brandon), Jill and Carrie; 2 great nephews, Jon and Max; and 1 great, great niece, Anya.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, September 15, 2017, from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan.  The funeral service will follow Saturday morning, September 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home chapel.  Burial will be in the Fairdealing Cemetery.
