Alta L. Knowlton, 89, of Doniphan died Thursday, January 18, 2007, in Ripley County Memorial Hospital in Doniphan. Mrs. Knowlton was born January 21, 1917, in the Oak Grove community in Ripley County. She worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C. during World War II.. She and her husband operated a trucking company and she was one of the fist female truck drivers. She was a member of the VFW Post #3485 Ladies Auxiliary in Doniphan, a member of Oak Grove Church of God and attended Logan Creek General Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling, music, singing, gardening and birds. She married Van "Buren" Knowlton on January 28, 1944, in Neosho. He died on August 11, 2006. Surviving are two sons, Delbert Knowlton of Doniphan and Van Knowlton of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Wilma Stevens and Jane Diekemper both of Doniphan; one brother, Dr. Gene Leroux of Doniphan; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be 5-7 today in Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Brother Hubert Payne offication. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Doniphan
