Susan and Jane: I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I don't get the Prospect News anymore and Punkie sent me his obituary, Anyway, he was always very nice to me when I was a kid and also as an adult. He was pleasant and always ready to show me his flowers when I would drive by your house. He did have a beautiful garden. I just wanted you to know that I was thinking of both of you during this time of sorrow. Reva Bennett Schwan

I enjoyed working for Lanson as a teenager and thought he had an amazing life, I generally ate lunch with Lanson and Susy anytime I worked for him, which always included black eyed peas, and was fascinated with stories of IGA stores and boxing matches -especially the one where he fought an Instructor one weight class up in Springfield which taught him there are better ways to make money. Lanson was truly amazing.....my thought are with him now.

Oh, my world seems suddenly smaller. What a larger than life personality Mr. Phillips (always Mr. Phillips to me)had, whose passing leaves such a hole, even to one who has not seen him in several years. Blessings to you and yours. Amy

Susan, I visited your dad in 2004 and got a tour of his ongoing projects: garage, yard, family room. His energy and enthusiasm even in old age will continue to inspire me. On top of this, he had a big heart and he loved Susie, and a much-loved daughter has to the best legacy of all.

Susan, My Dad can't speak for himself and I didn't know him to make a habit of openly complimenting other people. However, I do know he had a deep respect for Lanson as a businessman, a husband and father, and as a Combat Veteran who experienced war duty over and above the norm. Tricia sends her love.

Susan, What a Dad you had! When I think about my friends and acquaintenances in Doniphan he is one of the top five that always comes to mind. He stood out from the crowd, was his own person, a real salt of the earth, and an inspiration to me. He inspired me in a direct manner when I worked at the store when he yelled at me to "Get some fire in your ass"(I must have been dragging)Recently, about ten years ago when he was in his late 80's he inspired me in a more indirect way. I was in Doniphan visiting and ended up doing some yardwork on a hot and muggy day for Geraline Fagan across the street from your house. Before long, an unsolicited and overeager Lanson was helping. After we loaded Gearline's yard debris in the truck Lanson supplied we did the same thing at his house. Then we hauled and unloaded the overfull pickup at the dump. The overall process took about three hot and active hours. In the middle of the process Lanson, sweating, smiling, his eyes dancing looked me right in the eye and proclaimed "Johnny, I LIKE TO WORK". In my mind he was setting himself apart from the majority who see work as a burden and something to be avoided. I think of his proclamation when I feel I'm being overworked or when I think I've got too much on my plate. Hooray for Lanson and thanks for your lessons!

Dear Daughters, I always thought of a lot of your father. When I was young, he was always so friendly in the IGA store, and I remember how much my parents thought of him. Also, Grace Redwine next door was a relative of mine (I miss her), and she had nothing but good things to say about Lanson and Tommie. He did a lot for Doniphan through the years, and I admired the quiet beautiful way he lived in his retirement. I would drive by his house and he would be out there working in those beautiful flowers. You have much to be thankful for and proud of. Sincerely, Marilyn Woolard

Susan, All of Doniphan shares your loss in the passing of this wonderful man. I will always remember being your neighbor, I will remember his beautiful yard of flowers and I will always remember how much he cared for your mother. I once came to his home for a Project Graduation donation and he had a package of flower seeds in his hand. He handed me the package and said, "Here, count these seeds." Of course, I did!! One other thing....when your mother was ill Liz (Tanner) Capps and I were compiling the Ripley County Bicentennial Cookbook. He came to my home to give me some recipes from Tommie. He wanted her to be included in the book. That is just the kind of loving, caring man he was. He will be missed. Debbie Swindle Littles
