June 9, 1922 - October 17, 2009 Jessie Mae Slayton Woodard, 87, of Doniphan died Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Ripley County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Woodard was born June 9, 1922, to Effie Mae and Jesse Swaers Slayton in Fairdealing, Missouri. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in Naylor and then Doniphan. On April 27, 1946, she was married to Carlton Woodard in Corning, Arkansas. Before she married, she taught school in a number of one-room schoolhouses in Ripley County. After marrying and moving to Naylor she was a homemaker but also continued to substitute teach in the Naylor school system for many years. She liked sewing, quilting, gardening and was an active 4-H leader. During retirement, she enjoyed taking care of her grandchild and visiting friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Fuller and her husband Ed, of Prescott, Arizona; her granddaughter, Heather Sieberg of Doniphan, Missouri; one sister, Margaret Hopwood, of Marion, Arkansas; one brother, Roger Slayton of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by estranged daughter, Carla Johnson of Florence, Oregon. Mrs. Woodard was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Woodard; her parents, Effie Mae and Jesse Swaers Slayton; one sister, JoAnn Herrick; and four brothers: Norman, Earl, Glenn and Jerry Slayton. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 20, from 5-8 PM at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan, Missouri. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 21, at 10 AM at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be held at the Naylor Cemetery in Naylor.
