Obituary of Elvis Martin

Elvis Levy Martin, Rolla, MO, age 91, passed away on March 14, 2014, in Rolla. He was born in Ripley County, MO, to Edward Martin and Hattie Crutchfield Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Edna Lee Hawkins Martin; son, Mike Martin (wife, Nettie) of Rolla; daughter Joan Wilson (husband Tom) of Lee's Summit, MO; 5 grandsons, Michael (wife Andrea), Rob (wife Laura) and Greg Martin, Jay (wife Emily) and Brian (wife Alicia) Wilson; and 6 great-grandchildren, Jake, Allie, Kyle, Maddie, Sophie and Sloan. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters (Thelma Tabor, Catherine Leonard) and two brothers (Delmar, George). He was raised on a farm in Ripley County for a few years before he moved with his family to Detroit, Michigan. He returned to Ripley County at age 16 and lived there until he entered the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served in Saipan working as a crew chief mechanic, Tech Sgt., on B-29 bombers. When he came back from World War II, he married the love of his life and they resided on a farm before they moved to the St. Louis area to work and raise their family. They retired in 1981 and moved back to their farm and spent many happy years raising cattle, growing gardens, shepherding grandchildren and involving themselves in the community. Elvis was respected by many for his devotion to a Christian life, attending Currentview Church of Christ where he led singing and taught classes. He was well known for his heart-felt prayers. Services will be held Saturday, March 22, at Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by the funeral at 1:00 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at New Hope Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Home in Paragould, AR.
