Louie Holmes, Jr., 78, died Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Mr. Holmes, son of Louie and Pearl (Evetts) Holmes, Sr., was born July 21, 1935, in Marion, Illinois. He had been a painter and for several years worked for the Doniphan R-1 School District in maintenance. Mr. Holmes enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time on his farm and he especially loved being with his granddaughters. He was a member of His Place Church and was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.
On December 15, 1961, he was married to Ruth Messersmith in Peoria, Illinois, and she survives.
Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Brenda Holmes, of Fairdealing, Missouri; two granddaughters, Melinda and Michelle Holmes of Fairdealing, Missouri; and one sister, Shirley Knight of Peoria.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Deloris Gossard and Josephine Hassler, and one brother, Chuck Holmes.
Visitation will be held Saturday evening, October 26, 2013, from 5 - 8 p.m. at His Place Church in Doniphan. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013, in the church sanctuary with Brother Ben Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Bethany Cemetery with full military honors.
