Jerry L. Richmond, 80, of Grandin, Missouri, died Thursday, August 8, 2013, at his home after a sixteen month-long battle with cancer. Jerry was born in Ripley County, Missouri, on March 30, 1933. He was the son of Roy and Evelyn (Freeman) Richmond. On February 28, 1952, Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Lee West at Doniphan, Missouri. After graduating from Grandin High School in 1952, Jerry went to work at McDonnell Aircraft (later it became McDonnell-Douglas). He started as 5th grade SMAR, on to learner-helper, then assistant foreman, on to general foreman and then to superintendent. At his retirement he was manufacturing manager of the St. Charles, Missouri plant. He helped make the Mercury and Gemini spacecrafts. Jerry retired in 1988 and moved "back home" to Ripley County. Jerry was a scholarship-winning basketball player in high school and played many years on "McDonnell-Douglas" basketball and softball teams. He enjoyed quail hunting, fishing, reading and being in the country. Jerry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia; one son, Randy Richmond of Grandin; two grandsons, Jonathan Richmond (and Kelli) of Doniphan and Shane Richmond of Belleville, Illinois; two granddaughters, Renee Richmond of Columbia, Missouri, and Marcie West of Sullivan, Missouri; 3 great-grandsons, Larry Timothy Richmond and Brody Lyman Richmond, both of Doniphan and Jordan West of Sullivan. Other survivors are one brother, Billy (and Alta) Richmond of Grandin and one sister, Joyce (and Jim) Beal of Doniphan. Jerry was preceded in death by sons, Larry Wayne and Blaine Lyman Richmond; one daughter-in-law, Christa Richmond and both his parents. Jerry was a good husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. Visitation will be Saturday evening, August 10, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will take place Sunday morning, August 11, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Stephens Cemetery on K Highway. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
